Well, I decided to pause one of the books I'm currently reading just because of a booktok recommendation that has been running in my FYP every now and then. And the curiosity got the best of me so I got the War of Her Heart by Lexi Hodges.
Read the whole thing in a span of 24 hours. Lost me a couple hours of sleep for sure.
The book is said to be a Romantic Fantasy filled with forbidden love, plot twists, betrayal, banter, and a steamy love triangle.
Book Description:
Violet has lived her entire life in the Mountain Realm and has been in a secret relationship with Calum, the Sovereign of her realm, which is completely forbidden. The rule is Every Sovereign must marry from the royal bloodlines of the Seven Sovereigns.
When Calum is sent to the Night Realm to begin his engagement to the sister of the Night Realm’s Sovereign, he promises Violet he will find a way out of the engagement and make his way back to her. Violet holds onto that promise until she finds herself in the Night Realm where she realizes everything isn’t as true as she thought it was.
To make matters worse, the Sovereign of the Night Realm—the most evil and vicious of them all—has taken a strange liking to Violet and is quite curious about her rare heart condition which is something unheard of amongst fae.
Now Violet must navigate her way through the next several months as she fights an internal battle between her heart and her head.
My Review: ⭐⭐⭐ 3.5 rating
This book felt a bit tame compared to other spicy reads I've enjoyed. While it didn’t quite have the same intensity, I still found it satisfying, especially because I’m a fan of the trope it explores. The author clearly put effort into developing the protagonist, but it fell a bit short - considering the cultures they tried to incorporate into the world-building. Unfortunately, it didn’t feel like the female lead’s character truly reflected these cultural aspects.
By the time I reached the final chapters, the pacing felt rushed, leaving me slightly confused at certain points. Despite that, the ending still managed to leave me satisfied. There were parts of the story that felt a little shallow, as if something was missing, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Overall, I did enjoy the read—especially since it reignited my passion for reading again. It was one of the books that helped jump-start my reading goals for the year, and for that, I’m grateful. Any book that sparks my interest deserves credit, even if it didn’t quite hit all the marks.
Now, gonna continue reading. BRB.
See you in my next update!
